Opera-bouffe in four acts
Book of Lorenzo da Ponte, after the comedy The Marriage of Figaro de Beaumarchais
Created on 1 May 1786 at the Burgtheater in Vienna.
This opera is the first of three works from the collaboration between Mozart and Lorenzo da Ponte, the other two being Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte. A libretto in Italian based on a French play in Spain, set to music by Mozart, an Austrian and European composer before time, Le Nozze di Figaro are adapted from the Marriage of Figaro, the comedy of Beaumarchais, Created in triumph in 1784. It was Mozart who, with the approval of the Emperor Joseph II, proposed the text to Lorenzo da Ponte, who made a libretto of it, also erasing from the libretto all the political references of the original.
At the castle of Aguas-Frescas, near Seville, the social order wavered. The amorous desires shake the hierarchy and the conflicts of power erupt. The Rosine of the Barber of Seville is now the Countess Almaviva. His husband's volage continues, among others, the wife of his wife, Susanna, who must marry Figaro entered the service of the count but also the daughter of her gardener, the little Barbarina. He is however competed by the young page Cherubino, who chases all the women of his assiduity and in particular the countess, his godmother. For her part, old Marcellina, aided by Doctor Bartolo and Basilio, wants to prevent the wedding of Suzanne and Figaro, for he has promised her a marriage ...
By the humor of situations and misunderstandings, the rhythm of the libretto and the perfection of orchestral writing, Le Nozze di Figaro is one of the most perfect examples of successful marriage between poetry and music
