Robin McKelle is an American singer, she is immersed in jazz, soul and blues. Her universe is influenced by Ray Charles, Nina Simone or Donny Hathaway but she is rather compared to Ella Fitzgerald.
First part: Buckshot Gala.
Hailed for her powerful and expressive contralto voice and her qualities as a performer, we (re)discover her here in a more personal, sensitive and nuanced register, but always as moving.
Robin McKelle is accompanied by a group of accomplished musicians including co-producer, pianist and arranger Shedrick Mitchell, acoustic and electric bassist Richie Goods, drummer Charles Haynes and guitarist Nir Felder. Saxophonist Keith Loftis follows McKelle on his personal composition "Head High" and trumpet player Marquis Hill on Lana Del Rey's "Born to die".
The energy and connection with the musicians can be felt throughout the album with extraordinary arrangements allowing for continuity in the music despite the fusion of jazz, soul, r&b, blues and rock.
Whether the cover is that of the exuberant Dolly Parton or the desperate Del Rey, McKelle seamlessly transitions between the emotions of each song and takes ownership of each one.
